Honolulu's TheBus and Handi-Van Systems Hit by Cyberattack

Published:

The Honolulu Department of Transportation Services has confirmed a cyber attack that has led to an ongoing outage affecting TheBus and Handi-Van systems. The disruption began at 1 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2024, resulting in the offline status of various online services, including real-time GPS services and Holo Card readers. Due to the attack, passengers are experiencing significant inconvenience, as they can no longer check bus arrival times online, causing many to leave home earlier and wait longer for buses. Additionally, Holo Cards, used for fare payments, cannot be scanned, forcing passengers to show their cards to drivers without being charged, leading to financial losses for TheBus.

Authorities and Oahu Transit Services are actively investigating the incident to determine the breach's origin and extent. While there are plans to restore the Holo Card system by Tuesday, there is no clear timeline for the restoration of the online services. The cyber attack has caused significant disruption to public transportation in Honolulu, impacting the daily commutes of many residents and highlighting vulnerabilities in the city's transportation infrastructure.
