Will County lies in northeastern Illinois, extending south and southwest from the edge of Chicago’s Cook County. Joliet is the county seat and largest city, while suburban communities, historic towns, farmland and protected prairies create a varied landscape. The Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers meet within the county to form the Illinois River, making the area an important transportation crossroads. Will County was organized in 1836 as settlement expanded along canals and overland routes.
