Location overview
Moore County is in south-central North Carolina, with Carthage as its county seat. Its landscape includes the clay country along the Deep River in the north and the sandy soils and pine forests of the Sandhills in the southeast. Longleaf pine forests supported an early naval-stores industry. Railroad construction through the Sandhills in the 1870s helped establish shipping towns and later resort communities. Southern Pines and Pinehurst developed as destinations for health retreats and recreation.
