Cherokee County, Texas, USA

Cherokee County is a county in East Texas, within the wooded Piney Woods region southeast of Tyler and west of Nacogdoches. Rusk is the county seat, while Jacksonville is its largest city; other communities include Alto, Bullard, Cuney, Gallatin, New Summerfield, Reklaw and Wells. The county’s landscape consists of rolling forested uplands, agricultural valleys, creeks and reservoirs, including portions of Lake Palestine and Lake Jacksonville, with the Neches River forming much of its western boundary. U.S. highways 69, 79, 84 and 175 provide the principal transportation routes. Timber, poultry, cattle, agriculture, manufacturing and healthcare are important parts of the local economy. Cherokee County covers 1,052.96 square miles of land and had approximately 50,400 residents at the 2020 census.
