Location overview

Atqasuk is a city on the Meade River in Alaska’s North Slope Borough, southwest of Utqiaġvik. The area has a long history as a hunting and fishing ground. Coal mined there during World War II was transported to Utqiaġvik, and the settlement was once known as Meade River. Residents re-established the community in the 1970s, and it incorporated in 1982. Subsistence caribou hunting and fishing remain important to local life.
