Location overview
Point Hope is a city on a peninsula projecting into the Chukchi Sea in Alaska’s North Slope Borough. Its surroundings preserve a long history of Iñupiat settlement, including the Old Tigara and Ipiutak archaeological sites. The city incorporated in 1966. Erosion and storm-flooding risks prompted relocation to higher ground in the 1970s. Hunting, fishing and whaling remain central to community life.
