Lakewood is a city in Jefferson County, Colorado, immediately west of Denver. It extends from the high plains into the Rocky Mountain foothills. The Lakewood name was recorded for a residential subdivision in 1889, and rail connections helped the surrounding community develop. The city incorporated in 1969 after decades of agricultural, industrial and suburban growth. West Colfax Avenue, older neighborhoods and later retail centers reflect those stages of development.
