Evanston is a city in northeastern Cook County, Illinois, situated along the western shore of Lake Michigan immediately north of Chicago. It is bordered by Chicago to the south, Skokie to the west, Wilmette to the north and Lake Michigan to the east. Evanston is closely integrated with the Chicago metropolitan area through Metra commuter rail, the Chicago Transit Authority’s Purple Line and major roads including Ridge Avenue, Chicago Avenue and Sheridan Road. Northwestern University occupies a substantial lakefront campus in the city’s northeastern section and is one of Evanston’s defining institutions and largest employers. The city combines a dense downtown, established residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, parks and several public beaches along the lakefront. Evanston covers about 7.78 square miles of land and had 78,110 residents at the 2020 census.
