Bridgewater is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, about 25 miles south of Boston. The Taunton River begins near the community, which combines a historic center, residential neighborhoods, college grounds and former industrial areas. Settled in the 17th century, Bridgewater later developed through ironworking, shoe manufacturing and rail connections. Bridgewater State University gives the town a prominent educational role in southeastern Massachusetts. Education, health care, local commerce and commuting now complement its industrial heritage.
