Brockton is a city in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, about 20 miles south of Boston, and one of the county’s two seats. Compact neighborhoods and commercial districts developed around rail lines and factories on the inland coastal plain. Known historically for shoe manufacturing, Brockton became one of New England’s leading industrial cities during the 19th century. Its diverse communities and boxing heritage are prominent parts of local identity. Health care, education, retail, small manufacturing and regional transportation support the city today.
