Burlington is a suburban town in Middlesex County in eastern Massachusetts, approximately 12 miles northwest of central Boston and positioned near the junction of the Route 128/Interstate 95 technology corridor and U.S. Route 3. It is bordered by Bedford to the west, Billerica to the north, Wilmington to the northeast, Woburn to the southeast and Lexington to the south. The town covers about 11.9 square miles and lies across the watersheds of the Ipswich, Mystic and Shawsheen river systems, with Vine Brook and the Mill Pond Reservoir among its principal water features. Burlington was historically an agricultural community, but construction of Route 128 transformed it during the mid-20th century into a major residential, commercial and employment center containing Burlington Mall, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center and numerous technology and professional-services offices. Despite its extensive development, Burlington retains conservation areas and wooded open space, including the Mill Pond Conservation Area and portions of the Burlington Landlocked Forest. It had 26,377 residents at the 2020 census and is governed as a town through a representative Town Meeting and Select Board.
