Fitchburg is a city in northern Worcester County, Massachusetts, about 45 miles northwest of Boston. The Nashua River crosses a landscape of wooded hills, compact neighborhoods and former mill districts that developed around waterpower and rail connections. Fitchburg was incorporated as a town in 1764 and became a city in 1872, growing into an important center for paper, machinery and textile production. Fitchburg State University, cultural institutions and surviving industrial architecture remain prominent parts of the city. Manufacturing, education, health care and regional services continue to connect Fitchburg with nearby Leominster and the wider north-central Massachusetts economy.
