South St. Paul is a city in Dakota County on the Mississippi River immediately southeast of Saint Paul. The river, railroads and the former Union Stockyards made the city one of the Upper Midwest’s leading livestock and meatpacking centers during the twentieth century. South St. Paul had an estimated population of 20,590 in 2024. Industrial land and transportation connections remain prominent parts of the community even as former stockyard properties have been redeveloped. Manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, health care, retail and public services now support a more diversified economy.
