Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi, USA flag

Oxford is the county seat of Lafayette County in the wooded hills of north-central Mississippi. The courthouse square, surrounding neighborhoods and the University of Mississippi campus form the city’s best-known landscape. Founded in the 1830s and named for the English university city, Oxford later became closely associated with writer William Faulkner and the civil rights history of the university. Education, publishing, arts, tourism, health care and a busy restaurant scene give the city an outsized cultural role.
