Location overview
West Point is the county seat of Clay County in northeastern Mississippi’s Black Prairie region. Together with Columbus and Starkville, it forms the Golden Triangle, a regional center of industry and transportation. The city received its municipal charter in 1858 after the arrival of the Mobile & Ohio Railroad. Its cultural traditions include the Prairie Arts Festival and a connection to blues musician Howlin’ Wolf, who was born nearby. A windmill on the city parkway has become a local landmark associated with the arts festival.
