Municipality
Location overview

Billings is a city and the seat of Yellowstone County in south-central Montana. It lies in the Yellowstone River valley, where sandstone cliffs known as the Rimrocks shape the landscape around the city. The townsite was platted in 1882 during the expansion of the Northern Pacific Railroad, and Billings incorporated in 1885. It developed into a regional center for trade, transportation, health care and education. The river, surrounding agricultural lands and nearby prairie contribute to the city’s setting.
