Location overview

Carlisle is a borough and the seat of Cumberland County in south-central Pennsylvania’s Cumberland Valley. Founded in 1751, it grew around a courthouse square that remains the center of its historic downtown. Dickinson College and Carlisle Barracks are longstanding institutions. From 1879 to 1918, the barracks housed a federal boarding school that sought to forcibly assimilate Native children. The former school grounds are now part of Carlisle Federal Indian Boarding School National Monument.
