Lancaster is a city in south-central Pennsylvania and the seat of Lancaster County. Laid out around a central square in the early 18th century, it prospered at a crossroads of overland trade routes. Rail service and factories later expanded its role as an industrial center serving the surrounding farm region. Penn Square and Central Market preserve the city’s long relationship with public gathering and agricultural commerce.
