Location overview

Amarillo is a city in the Texas Panhandle, in southern Potter County and extending into Randall County. It is the Potter County seat and a commercial center for the surrounding region. The town was platted in 1887 beside the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway and grew rapidly as a cattle-shipping point. Additional rail connections strengthened its role as a distribution center for agriculture. Oil, natural gas and helium development helped shape the city’s later growth.
