Midland is a city and the seat of Midland County in the Permian Basin of West Texas. It developed from Midway Station, established on the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881, and took the name Midland in 1884. Ranching and cattle shipping supported its early growth. Oil development in the 1920s and later industry expansion transformed it into a regional petroleum center. The city lies on generally flat terrain along Interstate 20, east of Odessa.
