Vergennes is a city in Addison County in Vermont’s Champlain Valley. Otter Creek runs through the community, with falls that supported early mills and manufacturing. Incorporated in 1788, it is Vermont’s oldest chartered city. Its access to Lake Champlain made it a U.S. Navy shipbuilding site during the War of 1812. The historic downtown includes the Vergennes Opera House, an 1897 building restored as a performing arts and civic venue.
