Location overview
Shell Lake is a small city on the western shore of its namesake lake and the county seat of Washburn County in northwestern Wisconsin. Wooded neighborhoods, public beaches and clear water place the community firmly within the Northwoods lake country. The city developed during the lumber era after a sawmill and railroad reached the area in the 1880s, later shifting toward tourism and year-round local commerce. Shell Lake counted 1,355 residents in the 2020 census. Lake recreation, small businesses, health services and the city’s long-running arts and music traditions give it a distinctive regional identity.
