Nacogdoches is a city in East Texas and the county seat of Nacogdoches County, located about 140 miles northeast of Houston and 90 miles southeast of Tyler along U.S. Highway 59 (future Interstate 69). Often recognized as the oldest continuously settled town in Texas, its history spans Native American Caddo communities, Spanish and Mexican colonial settlements, the Republic of Texas and the modern state. The city serves as a regional center for government, education, healthcare and commerce and is home to Stephen F. Austin State University. Surrounded by the forests and rolling hills of the Piney Woods region, Nacogdoches is known for its historic downtown, preserved landmarks and role as a cultural and economic hub for East Texas.
