CentroMed

CentroMed is a nonprofit community health organization based in San Antonio, Texas, legally named El Centro del Barrio. It provides family medicine, pediatric care, women’s health, dental care and related services through community clinics. Other programs include behavioral health, pharmacy services, immunizations and assistance enrolling in health coverage. The organization began in 1971 with a counseling program for children and adolescents, incorporated as a nonprofit in 1973 and opened its first medical clinic in 1979. It began using the CentroMed name in 2001. A consumer-majority board of directors oversees the organization, whose programs also include health care for people experiencing homelessness.
