The Town of Townsend is the municipal government for a community in northwestern Middlesex County, Massachusetts, near the New Hampshire border. The town includes a compact center, residential neighborhoods, forests and former mill areas along the Squannacook River. Its location links a largely rural landscape with the employment and service centers of the Nashua and Fitchburg regions. Townsend was incorporated in 1732 and developed through farming, timber, water-powered industry and local trade. Historic buildings and conserved land continue to shape the town’s identity within the outer reaches of metropolitan Boston.
