Our Nov. 9 report cited Superintendent Kevin Newman’s notice to families that a weekend cybersecurity incident disrupted connectivity and phones throughout Manassas City Public Schools. The district engaged outside cybersecurity experts and took systems offline during the investigation. The disclosure supports confirmed cyber involvement, but the attack mechanism and any data impact were not established publicly.
The district closed all schools Monday, Nov. 10, because network and phone outages affected its ability to operate safely. Tuesday was a scheduled holiday. WTOP reported the schools reopened Wednesday, Nov. 12, on a two-hour delay, with phone service restored. Some technology tools remained intentionally offline during recovery. The city’s school system serves nine schools within the independent City of Manassas.
Classes and phones resumed by Nov. 12, but some applications remained offline then. No final all-systems-restored notice was verified, so current operational status is presumed resolved.
