Ransomware Attack Disrupts Cucamonga Valley Water District's Phone Payment System

On August 15, 2024, the Cucamonga Valley Water District (CVWD) in Rancho Cucamonga, California, suffered a ransomware attack that disrupted its computer systems, particularly affecting the phone payment system. Although water distribution services were not impacted due to being on a separate network, the incident prevented customers from making phone payments until the issue was resolved on August 26. The district, serving around 190,000 customers, has engaged third-party specialists and federal authorities to investigate the breach. It remains unclear whether any personal information was compromised or if a ransom was paid. This incident marks the second cyberattack targeting CVWD’s payment systems, following a similar breach in 2019.
