Cyberattack Disrupts Virginia's Williamsburg-James City County Schools
Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Schools in Williamsburg, Virginia, confirmed Tuesday it was the target of a cybersecurity attack after the district experienced network disturbances starting Sunday. Spokeswoman Kara Wall said the division’s technology team contacted local and federal law enforcement, legal counsel, and cybersecurity experts to investigate. Acting Superintendent Daniel Keever said the incident disrupted school operations but did not affect campus safety or the ability to continue offline instruction. There is no evidence that employee or student devices were compromised, and it remains unclear if personal information was accessed.
The division is working with forensic investigators and cybersecurity professionals to determine the full scope of the incident and restore normal operations, a process that could take several weeks. Schools were closed Tuesday due to weather, but in-person instruction will resume Wednesday without network access. Keever encouraged staff to adapt lessons for an “unplugged” environment and assured families that updates would be shared as the investigation progresses.
