Yale New Haven Health Cyberattack Disrupts Connecticut Hospitals

Yale New Haven Health (YNHH), Connecticut’s largest healthcare system, located in New Haven, continues to recover from a cyberattack that disrupted IT and phone systems across its network. While patient care remained unaffected, investigations by federal authorities and cybersecurity firm Mandiant suggest that the incident may be linked to a broader wave of cyber threats targeting healthcare institutions. The attack, which emerged over the weekend, follows a recent data breach at Welltok, an online wellness program provider, that compromised more than 800,000 Connecticut residents' personal data. Additionally, a ransomware group known as Rhysida has claimed responsibility for a separate month-long attack on Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN) hospitals, which are currently in the process of being acquired by YNHH.

YNHH is now pushing for state financial assistance to mitigate the attack's impact and complete its $435 million acquisition of Waterbury Hospital, Manchester Memorial, and Rockville General Hospitals, all of which suffered significant disruptions due to cyber incidents. The attack on these hospitals previously forced emergency room diversions, delayed elective surgeries, and left staff without access to critical patient records. While YNHH has assured that its electronic medical record system remains operational, concerns persist over potential data exposure, as hackers continue targeting the healthcare sector. Investigations are ongoing, and affected patients may receive further notifications depending on the outcome.
