La Plata County is in southwestern Colorado, with Durango as its county seat. Established in 1874, it includes the municipalities of Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio. Part of the Southern Ute Indian Reservation lies within the county and extends into neighboring counties. Public lands managed by federal, state and local agencies account for a substantial portion of its landscape. The county operates under Colorado’s statutory county system with a three-member board of commissioners.
