Marshall County is a county in central Iowa, centered on the city of Marshalltown, which serves as the county seat and principal population and employment center. The county lies within Iowa’s rolling till plains and is characterized by productive farmland, small towns, wooded stream corridors and the Iowa River, which flows through the county from northwest to southeast. U.S. Highway 30 crosses the county east to west, while Iowa Highway 14 and other state routes connect Marshalltown with surrounding communities including State Center, Melbourne, Le Grand, Albion, Gilman, Laurel and Liscomb. Agriculture remains a defining land use, but the county also supports manufacturing, healthcare, education and regional government services concentrated around Marshalltown. Marshall County covers about 572.5 square miles of land and had 40,105 residents at the 2020 census. County government is administered by an elected three-member Board of Supervisors, with offices based at the courthouse in Marshalltown.
