O'Brien County, Iowa, USA

O’Brien County is located in northwestern Iowa, approximately midway between the Minnesota border and the Missouri River. It is bordered by Osceola County to the north, Clay County to the east, Cherokee County to the south, and Sioux County to the west. Primghar, near the county’s geographic center, serves as the county seat, while other incorporated communities include Sheldon, Paullina, Sanborn, Hartley and Sutherland. The county lies within Iowa’s gently rolling prairie, where fertile agricultural land dominates the landscape and supports extensive corn, soybean and livestock production. The Little Sioux River watershed drains much of the county, and U.S. Highway 59, U.S. Highway 18 and Iowa Highway 10 provide its principal transportation corridors. Agriculture remains the foundation of the local economy, supplemented by food processing, manufacturing, healthcare and regional commercial services. O’Brien County encompasses approximately 573 square miles of land and had 14,182 residents at the 2020 census.
