Butler County is in south-central Kansas and includes part of the Flint Hills. El Dorado is its county seat, and Augusta is another of its principal communities. The county was established in 1855, before Kansas became a state. Tallgrass prairie and cattle grazing are important features of its landscape and agricultural history. Oil discoveries around El Dorado and Augusta helped make petroleum a major part of the county’s economy.
