Location overview
Augusta is a city in Butler County, Kansas, at the confluence of the Whitewater and Walnut rivers. C.N. James established a trading post there in 1868 and named the settlement after his wife. The city incorporated in 1871. Rail service supported its livestock and agricultural trade, and later oil and natural gas development became major sources of employment. The original trading-post cabin and a working Art Deco theater remain part of its historic downtown.
