Location overview

Jefferson County is a county in north-central Kentucky along the Ohio River, across from southern Indiana. Louisville is its county seat and principal urban center. Formed in 1780 as one of the three original counties created from Kentucky County, Virginia, it was named for Thomas Jefferson, then Virginia’s governor. Its government consolidated with Louisville’s in 2003. The county also includes separately incorporated communities such as Jeffersontown, Middletown, Shively and St. Matthews, which retain their own local governments.
