Location overview
Lewis County lies in northeastern Kentucky along the Ohio River, with Vanceburg as its county seat. It was formed from part of Mason County in 1806 and named for explorer Meriwether Lewis. Rolling hills in the west give way to more rugged terrain in the central and eastern parts of the county. Forests and river valleys shape much of its landscape. Timber production was important to its economy during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
