Sagadahoc County is located on Maine’s southern midcoast, where the Kennebec River empties into the Gulf of Maine. It is bordered by Lincoln County to the east, Cumberland County to the southwest, Androscoggin County to the northwest, and Kennebec County to the north. The county seat is Bath, a historic shipbuilding city known as the “City of Ships,” while other municipalities include Topsham, Arrowsic, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Georgetown, Phippsburg, Richmond, West Bath and Woolwich. The county’s geography is characterized by tidal rivers, rocky peninsulas, extensive salt marshes, coastal islands and protected harbors, with Reid State Park and several wildlife refuges preserving portions of its shoreline. U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 295 provide the primary transportation corridors through the county. Sagadahoc County has long been associated with the maritime industry, particularly through Bath Iron Works, one of the nation’s largest naval shipyards, while tourism, healthcare, retail, government services and small manufacturing also contribute significantly to the local economy. The county encompasses approximately 254 square miles of land and had 39,607 residents at the 2020 census.
