Charlevoix County is located in northern Michigan along the shores of Lake Michigan, with the city of Charlevoix serving as its county seat. The county includes the cities of Boyne City and East Jordan, several inland lakes, and Beaver Island and other islands in the northern part of Lake Michigan. It was organized in 1869 and named for Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, a French Jesuit missionary and explorer who traveled through the Great Lakes region in the 18th century. Tourism, boating, agriculture and manufacturing are important parts of the local economy, and the county’s population was estimated at 26,036 in 2025. County government provides services including courts, elections, law enforcement, road administration, public health and emergency management.
