Michigan is a state in the Great Lakes region of the Upper Midwest, composed of the Lower and Upper peninsulas and bordered by Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio, with extensive water boundaries shared with Illinois, Minnesota and the Canadian province of Ontario. The two peninsulas are separated by the Straits of Mackinac and connected by the Mackinac Bridge, while the state touches four of the five Great Lakes—Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie—and has one of the longest freshwater coastlines in the world. Lansing is the state capital, while Detroit is its largest city and principal metropolitan and industrial center; other major cities include Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn. Michigan’s geography ranges from the heavily urbanized and agricultural southern Lower Peninsula to the forests, mineral districts and rugged shoreline of the Upper Peninsula, with manufacturing, automotive production, agriculture, forestry, tourism, healthcare and technology forming important parts of its economy. Michigan covers approximately 56,539 square miles of land and had 10,077,331 residents at the 2020 census.
