Lowell is a small city in eastern Kent County where the Flat River meets the Grand River, about 15 miles east of Grand Rapids. Its historic downtown, riverwalk and nearby trail connections give the community a compact center closely tied to its waterways. Residential neighborhoods transition quickly to the farms, wooded hills and smaller settlements of surrounding Lowell and Vergennes townships. Lowell recorded 4,114 residents in the 2020 Census. Manufacturing, health care, retail, construction, agriculture-linked businesses and tourism support the local economy.
