Wayne County occupies southeastern Michigan along the Detroit River and the western shore of Lake St. Clair. Detroit is the county seat and largest city, surrounded by older suburbs, Downriver industrial communities and outer residential areas. Established in 1796, the county became a center of Great Lakes trade and later the heart of the American automobile industry. Its international border crossings connect Michigan directly with Windsor, Ontario. Manufacturing, logistics, health care, education, technology and cultural institutions remain central to the region.
