Howard City is a village in western Montcalm County, Michigan, about 35 miles north of Grand Rapids. It sits near U.S. 131 amid farmland, woods and the small lakes and streams of the state’s central Lower Peninsula. The community was founded in the 1860s and grew after the arrival of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad. Its compact center continues to serve nearby rural townships and lake communities.
