Montcalm County lies in the central portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, northeast of Grand Rapids. Stanton is the county seat, while Greenville is its largest city and principal commercial center. Farms, forests, lakes and the Flat River shape a landscape of small towns and rural communities. Organized in 1850, the county developed through agriculture, lumbering and rail connections. Farming, food production, manufacturing, health care and outdoor recreation remain important to the area.
