Grattan Township occupies a rural area of eastern Kent County between the Grand Rapids metropolitan fringe and the Ionia County line. Grattan Center and Parnell are its principal historic communities, surrounded by farms, woodlands and scattered homes. Numerous inland lakes and wetlands make boating, fishing and other outdoor recreation a visible part of the township’s character. Grattan Township recorded 3,809 residents in the 2020 Census. Agriculture, construction, small businesses, recreation-related activity and commuting to nearby employment centers support the local economy.
