Bowne Township occupies the southeastern corner of Kent County, about 20 miles southeast of Grand Rapids. The township includes the unincorporated community of Alto and a rural landscape of farms, woodlots, wetlands and scattered lakes. Its historic crossroads and agricultural settlement pattern distinguish it from the more densely developed suburbs nearer Grand Rapids. Bowne Township recorded 3,289 residents in the 2020 Census. Agriculture remains prominent alongside small manufacturing, construction, local services and commuting to employment centers elsewhere in West Michigan.
