Municipality

Location overview

Muskegon is a city on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and the seat of Muskegon County. Its downtown and waterfront occupy the shore of Muskegon Lake, a natural harbor connected to Lake Michigan by a navigable channel. The city grew rapidly as a lumber port in the 19th century and later developed a more varied industrial base. Beaches, dunes, museums and maritime sites reflect both its coastal setting and working-waterfront history. Manufacturing, health care, education, tourism and regional commerce support the economy today.
