Spencer Township lies in northeastern Kent County along the Montcalm and Ionia county lines. The unincorporated community of Gowen is its principal settlement, surrounded by farms, forests, wetlands and numerous small lakes. Lincoln Lake and other waterways contribute to a rural landscape associated with fishing, boating and seasonal recreation. Spencer Township recorded 4,163 residents in the 2020 Census. Agriculture, construction, small manufacturing, local services, recreation and commuting to employment centers elsewhere in West Michigan support its economy.
