County or equivalent
Location overview

Tuscola County lies at the western edge of Michigan’s Thumb region, with Saginaw Bay along its northwestern border. Caro is the county seat. The Cass River crosses a largely rural landscape of small communities, farmland and woodland. Logging drove the county’s growth in the 19th century, followed by the expansion of farming. Sugar beets, corn, wheat and beans became important crops as cleared and drained land was brought into cultivation.
