Chaves County is in southeastern New Mexico. Created in 1889 from part of Lincoln County, it has Roswell as its county seat. Dexter, Hagerman and Lake Arthur lie farther south in the county. Agriculture, dairy farming, ranching, manufacturing and petroleum production contribute to the area’s economy.
