Kiowa County lies in southwestern Oklahoma, with Hobart as its county seat. Created in Oklahoma Territory in 1901, it takes its name from the Kiowa people, whose history is part of the Southern Plains. The county’s landscape is largely open flatland, with hillier terrain toward its southern edge. Communities include Snyder, Gotebo, Lone Wolf and Mountain View as well as Hobart. Farming and ranching have shaped settlement across this sparsely populated part of the state, while local lakes and streams mark its otherwise dry landscape.
